I’m going to dedicate this entire blog entry to spiders. Yes, spiders. This comic features a new character by the name of Paul, and Paul happens to be a daddy long legs spider. Of all the irrational fears I have (I have a lot, I’m very much like my character in the comics) I’d have to say that daddy long legs are the biggest irrational fear I have. The thought of those things coming even near me makes me rather upset! I watched a video on youtube recently of a nest of daddy long legs. It looked just like this big, hairy mass of stuff, but then you noticed that it was moving. Imagine walking out in the woods and finding something like that! Just thinking about it makes my skin crawl!
Anyway, yes, Paul the spider. I was having a hard time with this comic, as I said in my last blog post. There is a lot of time where Jamison and Sara are alone, and I really needed a comic relief character of some sort. I had no one to work with and the story was way too serious. It was almost a chore to write. So I thought up a sidekick for Jamison, and I had toyed with a bunch of different creatures until I finally settled on Paul. At first Paul was a lizard named Haley, but then I realized that it would be much funnier if the sidekick were something that my character was terrified of. :P
The name Paul came from an incident that happened in my kitchen sometime in the winter of this year. There was a little spider on the ceiling that was walking around. I named him Paul for some reason. He would start to move closer and I would say “Paul, you stay right where you are. If you start dangling towards me, I’m going to be very upset!” (yes, I am a weird person, I name spiders. :P) And the next day, Paul the spider sidekick was born.
Anyway, that’s it for this month. Tune in next month for more Paul and Jamison!
